🕰️ The History of Medical Cannabis in the UK, From Ancient Remedy to Modern Medicine

Updated: Oct 24

Hey folks, Buddy here. Let’s roll back the clock a bit. Before cannabis became a political talking point, it was one of nature’s oldest, and most trusted medicines, used by healers, doctors, and everyday people around the world.

So how did we go from legal and respected… to banned and feared… to finally being prescribed again in the UK? Grab a cuppa, this one’s a journey. ☕

🌿 The early days — when cannabis was a common medicine

Long before anyone called it “weed,” cannabis was part of daily medicine. Records show it being used in ancient China, India, and Egypt thousands of years ago to ease pain, spasms, and inflammation.

In Britain, doctors in the 1800s prescribed cannabis tinctures (oils and extracts) for everything from headaches to menstrual cramps. It was listed in the British Pharmacopeia, basically the official medical textbook of the time.

It wasn’t controversial, it was just another plant-based medicine that worked.

🚫 The fall — politics and prohibition

Fast forward to the 20th century, and things started to change. Global attitudes towards cannabis shifted as governments — especially under pressure from the U.S. began banning it.

In the UK, cannabis was effectively outlawed in 1928 under the Dangerous Drugs Act. It didn’t stop people using it, but it did stop doctors from prescribing it.

By the 1970s, cannabis was fully classified as a Class B drug, lumped in with amphetamines. Medical research ground to a halt.Decades of stigma followed — the plant went from medicine to menace almost overnight.

🌱 The comeback — science fights back

By the 1990s, the science started catching up again. Researchers rediscovered the endocannabinoid system, the network in our bodies that interacts naturally with compounds from the cannabis plant.

People living with epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, and PTSD began sharing real stories of relief where other medicines had failed. Public opinion started to shift.

Then came the turning point: In 2018, after several high-profile patient cases (like young children with severe epilepsy), the UK government made medical cannabis legal on prescription.

It wasn’t a full reopening of the gates, but it was a huge step forward.

💊 Where we are now

Today, medical cannabis is legal in the UK, but still highly regulated. Doctors on the GMC specialist register can prescribe it, mainly for conditions like:

  • Chronic pain

  • Anxiety

  • PTSD

  • Epilepsy

  • Multiple sclerosis

It’s still early days — NHS access is limited, but private clinics and patient programs (like Project Twenty21 and Sapphire Clinics) are helping thousands find relief safely.

🧠 What it means for the future

The story of cannabis in the UK is really the story of relearning what we once knew. Nature had it right all along, we just had to listen again.

Now, science and compassion are bringing the plant back where it belongs: in the hands of patients who need it.

Here at Nature’s No.1, that’s what we’re all about, education, honesty, and a healthy respect for the leaf that never stopped healing. 🌿

Until next time, Buddy
